Chapter 4 – Flying with a Newborn
One of the most frequently asked questions by parents is whether there is a minimum age for flying with a newborn.
In fact there is no minimum age for flying. Airlines generally do not set restrictions in this regard, so it is possible to book any type of flight without concern, provided a few precautions are taken depending on the destination country (3). The only limitation concerns newborns under 7 days old, as in this case a certificate from the child’s pediatrician is required to confirm the baby is fit to travel. However, each airline may apply specific rules.
Newborns do not have their own seat on a plane. Parents are usually seated in the first row, where there is more space to move around and a bit more comfort. During takeoff and landing, the baby must be held in the arms and secured to the parent’s seatbelt with a special extension strap. Alternatively, by purchasing an extra seat, parents can use an infant car seat installed on the aircraft seat, just like in a car. However, the car seat must comply with the technical specifications of the aircraft, so it’s necessary to check with the airline beforehand.

Flying with a newborn can be particularly stressful. By following some practical tips, it can be handled more calmly:
- Do not travel if the baby is unwell. A severe cold, for example, can make the experience very unpleasant.
- Stay calm and avoid getting frustrated by initial difficulties, allowing more time and adjusting expectations to the baby’s needs.
- Arrive early at the airport and, if necessary, book access to a lounge for a calm and equipped waiting environment.
- Pack smartly and thoroughly, to avoid delays at security checks. Ensure that liquids are packed according to regulations and no forbidden items are included.
- If possible, time the baby’s feeding to coincide with takeoff and/or landing. During these moments, sudden changes in air pressure can block the ears due to Eustachian tube closure. This can be very uncomfortable, if not painful, and newborns cannot manage it themselves. Parents can help by encouraging sucking and swallowing, ideally through feeding. If the baby refuses to feed, a pacifier may still help.
- Bring toys to keep the baby distracted during the flight.
- For easier mobility, a compact stroller is helpful. Some models are cabin approved. Still, since traveling with a baby involves many items, it may be better to check the stroller in to free up space for essentials (like a diaper bag, spare clothes, toys, etc.). Most airlines allow strollers to be checked in directly at the gate and picked up right outside the aircraft upon landing.
