Par exemple, en sachant que durant la longue phase de sommeil paradoxal (REM) le b\u00e9b\u00e9 peut bouger et \u00e9mettre des sons, il est important de bien distinguer les moments o\u00f9 il est actif mais dort encore, de ceux o\u00f9 il est r\u00e9ellement \u00e9veill\u00e9, afin d\u2019\u00e9viter de le toucher ou de lui parler inutilement (18). Sinon, on risque de ruiner les efforts faits pour l\u2019endormir\u2026 en le r\u00e9veillant trop t\u00f4t. La m\u00eame recommandation vaut lors des r\u00e9veils nocturnes. Il n\u2019est pas dit que le b\u00e9b\u00e9 ait toujours besoin de ses parents pour se rendormir : il se peut qu\u2019il y parvienne seul, signe d\u2019une maturation neurologique en cours. <strong>Il est donc pr\u00e9f\u00e9rable de l\u2019observer quelques instants et de ne pas le prendre imm\u00e9diatement dans les bras au premier signe de r\u00e9veil, mais d\u2019attendre qu\u2019il appelle r\u00e9ellement maman ou papa, s\u2019il en ressent le besoin.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>En grandissant, l\u2019organisme du b\u00e9b\u00e9 adapte progressivement ses rythmes biologiques en fonction des facteurs ext\u00e9rieurs. Par exemple, le rythme veille-sommeil se synchronise peu \u00e0 peu avec l\u2019alternance jour-nuit. Toutefois, durant les premi\u00e8res semaines de vie, le <strong>rythme circadien<\/strong> (l\u2019ensemble des rythmes biologiques sur 24 heures) est encore en phase de maturation. Le nouveau-n\u00e9 a besoin de temps pour accorder ses rythmes aux stimulations environnementales. La plus puissante de ces stimulations est la lumi\u00e8re du soleil : exposer le b\u00e9b\u00e9 \u00e0 la lumi\u00e8re naturelle pendant la journ\u00e9e et limiter, en revanche, l\u2019exposition \u00e0 la lumi\u00e8re artificielle le soir l\u2019aide \u00e0 s\u2019adapter plus rapidement (19).<\/p>\n<p>Une autre strat\u00e9gie dont l\u2019efficacit\u00e9 est largement d\u00e9montr\u00e9e pour accompagner un b\u00e9b\u00e9 vers le sommeil consiste \u00e0 instaurer une <strong>routine du soir, apaisante et rassurante<\/strong>, qui se r\u00e9p\u00e8te de fa\u00e7on relativement similaire chaque soir. Elle permet au petit de comprendre que la journ\u00e9e touche \u00e0 sa fin et qu\u2019un autre temps commence, celui de la nuit, et que maman et papa seront pr\u00e9sents pour lui pendant son sommeil s\u2019endormir, de nombre de r\u00e9veils nocturnes et m\u00eame d\u2019humeur, tant chez l\u2019enfant que chez les parents. Massages, caresses, bain chaud, lecture d\u2019une histoire ou berceuse : peu importe les activit\u00e9s incluses dans la routine du soir. Ce qui fait r\u00e9ellement la diff\u00e9rence, c\u2019est la disponibilit\u00e9 \u00e9motionnelle de l\u2019adulte, sa capacit\u00e9 \u00e0 pr\u00eater attention aux signaux de l\u2019enfant, \u00e0 comprendre son \u00e9tat \u00e9motionnel et \u00e0 r\u00e9pondre rapidement \u00e0 ses besoins.
