When buying products for newborns, it\u2019s natural to focus on colours, shapes and patterns: choosing beautiful and visually pleasing garments is part of the joy of caring for a baby. However, the true value of a textile product for infants goes beyond aesthetics. The most important message is hidden in the information provided on the label<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

A bodysuit<\/strong>, sleepsuit<\/strong> or blanket<\/strong> is not just an object: it is a material designed for direct and constant contact with the thinnest and most sensitive skin<\/strong> that exists. Understanding which fibres<\/strong> it is made of, what treatments<\/strong> it has undergone and how it should be washed<\/strong> or handled<\/strong> is essential to ensure the newborn\u2019s safety<\/strong>, comfort<\/strong> and wellbeing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

As consumers, we are used to reading detailed labels on all kinds of products: appliances, food or cosmetics, where ingredients, instructions and warnings guide us toward safe, informed choices. The same principle applies to textile products<\/strong>: knowing the characteristics of the materials helps assess whether a garment is suitable for a baby\u2019s delicate skin<\/strong> and physiological needs.<\/p>\n

The starting point is knowing which information the manufacturer<\/strong> is required to provide and learning how to interpret it correctly. Only then does choosing fabrics become an informed gesture, capable of combining beauty<\/strong>, safety<\/strong> and comfort<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

EU Regulation No. 1007\/2011: the legal foundation<\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n

The main legal reference in Europe for the fibre composition<\/strong> of textile products is Regulation (EU) No. 1007\/2011<\/strong>, in force since 2012. This regulation establishes:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Which fibres<\/strong> may be indicated with a specific name<\/li>\n
  • The obligation to state the fibre weight percentages<\/strong> in the product<\/li>\n
  • The correct denomination of fibres<\/strong>, to avoid misleading or ambiguous definitions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
    What does this mean in practice?<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h5>\n
    \"\"\u00a0 \u00a0\"\" \u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

    For a baby garment, such as a cotton bodysuit:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • The label must state 100% cotton<\/strong> (or indicate the percentage if the garment is a blend).<\/li>\n
    • If the garment contains elastane<\/strong>, the percentage must be clearly stated: for example, 95% cotton, 5% elastane<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
    • The order of the fibres must be in decreasing weight<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
      Obligations for manufacturers and sellers<\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n
        \n
      • Provide labels that are legible<\/strong>, durable<\/strong>, visible<\/strong> and in the language of the country<\/strong> of sale.<\/li>\n
      • Use only fibre names recognised by the regulation<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
      • Indicate non-textile parts of animal origin<\/strong> with the wording: \u201cContains non-textile parts of animal origin<\/strong>\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        This regulatory framework ensures transparency<\/strong>, helpful both for professionals and for families concerned about the newborn’s <\/span>safety<\/strong> and <\/span>comfort<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Nomenclature and commercial names: a detail not to be underestimated<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n

        The nomenclature of textile fibres<\/strong> is an important indicator of the quality<\/strong> and function<\/strong> of the fabric. Regulation (EU) No. 1007\/2011 requires manufacturers to use only the official terms listed in Annex I<\/strong>.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

        Examples:
        \n\u2022 \u201cNylon<\/strong>\u201d is not correct <\/em>\u2192<\/em> the official term is Polyamide<\/strong>
        \n\u2022 \u201cLycra<\/strong>\u201d is a commercial name <\/em>\u2192<\/em> the correct indication is Elastane<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

        A label that does not comply with these rules may raise doubts about the product\u2019s transparency<\/strong> and quality<\/strong>.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

        Beyond composition: other mandatory information on the label
        \n<\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n

        Textile labels also provide other essential information to ensure safety<\/strong>, traceability<\/strong> and proper care<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

        1. Responsible for placing the product on the market<\/strong>: each garment must include the name of the manufacturer<\/strong> or distributor<\/strong>.\n
            \n
          • It allows quick identification of the product\u2019s origin.<\/li>\n
          • It is an indicator of reliability<\/strong> and regulatory compliance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
              \n
            1. Country of origin<\/strong>: stating the country of origin is mandatory.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                \n
              • \n
                  \n
                • It helps understand where the garment was actually produced.<\/li>\n
                • It supports traceability<\/strong>, essential for products intended for newborns.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                  1. Care instructions<\/strong>: information on washing, drying, ironing and professional cleaning is essential.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                        The data shown on the label, together with the fibre composition<\/strong>, provides everything needed to ensure safety<\/strong>, traceability<\/strong> and proper garment care<\/strong>.
                        \nFor newborns, with extremely delicate skin<\/strong>, reading and correctly interpreting the label is a key step in ensuring protection<\/strong>, comfort<\/strong> and daily wellbeing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
