Chapter 13 – Play Mats and Gyms

To support new parents in stimulating their little ones, helpful accessories can include play mats (such as mats with toy arches and sound effects) and activity gyms – small spaces specifically designed for the baby’s first discoveries “in freedom.” These areas allow the baby to practice and refine motor skills and hand-eye-mouth coordination.

As time goes by and the baby’s motor skills continue to develop, it is advisable to use a large blanket or a special rubber mat for playtime. This allows the baby to lie on their back, roll to their sides, and eventually roll over completely—exploring the open space and experiencing psychomotor activities through horizontal movements on the floor. All of this helps prepare the baby for future developmental milestones.
